Toy Fox Terrier Breed Standard
Official breed standard as recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC).
The following breed standard defines the ideal characteristics, structure, and temperament of the Toy Fox Terrier. This standard is used as the basis for judging the breed in UKC events and for guiding responsible breeding practices.

General Appearance
The Toy Fox Terrier is small in size, with a body that is square when viewed from the side. The length of the head, neck and legs are in proportion to the length and depth of the body. The body is compact, with short and strong back. The tail is set high and may be docked or left natural.
The dog is naturally well-groomed, proud, animated, and alert. Characteristic traits are his elegant head, his short, glossy coat, and his spirited, terrier-like temperament.
Characteristics
The Toy Fox Terrier is self-possessed, spirited, and determined. He is energetic, intelligent, and easily trained. He is a comical, entertaining companion, yet he remains a true terrier. As a terrier, he is keenly interested in his surroundings and is always ready for a game or a walk.
Head
The head is elegant, balanced, and expressive. The skull is moderate in width, slightly rounded, and soft wedge-shaped. The muzzle is strong, in proportion to the skull.
Eyes: Dark, bright, and round, but not bulging. They reflect intelligence and alertness.
Ears: V-shaped, pointed, and set high on the skull. They are erect and alert.
Body
The body is balanced and square. The chest is deep, with well-sprung ribs. The back is straight, level, and muscular.
The loin is short and strong. The croup is level with the back.
Coat
The coat is short, dense, smooth, and glossy. It is fine in texture and covers the entire body. A slightly longer coat at the ruff is acceptable.
Color
The Toy Fox Terrier is primarily white with colored markings. Acceptable colors include:
- White, Black, and Tan (Tricolor)
- White and Black
- White and Tan
- White, Chocolate, and Tan
The body must be over fifty percent white. Spots on the body should match the head color.
Size
The ideal height for a Toy Fox Terrier is 8.5 to 11.5 inches at the withers. Weight should be proportionate to the size and bone structure of the dog, typically ranging from 3.5 to 7 pounds.
Temperament
The Toy Fox Terrier is highly intelligent, alert, and loyal. They are fearless and animated, making excellent companions and watchdogs. They should never be overly shy or aggressive.
Faults
Any departure from the ideal standard is considered a fault. The seriousness of the fault depends on the degree of deviation from the standard. Severe faults include apple head, undershot or overshot bite, and lack of terrier temperament.
This breed standard is recognized by the United Kennel Club and followed by NTFTA members and breeders.
